DEMI ANTER is an internationally acclaimed poet, actor and teacher hailing from the Californian desert. She is known for raw, intimate performances and personal-narrative-driven storytelling that weave together themes like mental health, multiculturalism, intergenerational migration and women's roles. Demi has performed across seven countries and on stages including Glastonbury Festival ('19, '22), the Scottish Storytelling Centre, Electric Picnic Festival, Bristol Old Vic, Poetry Ireland and WABE Berlin. She has taught poetry for organizations such as Women Writing Berlin Lab, WORD!, Toonspeak and BrightSparks.

 

She is the winner of numerous poetry slams including the Cursed Murphy Spoken Word Award and Wicked Slam. She has placed in the top three at Bristol's Lyra Slam —judged by Buddy Wakefield and Joelle Taylor—, Superheroes of Slam and Cúirt International Festival of Literature.

 

Her poetry and essays have been published by Magma, Ninth Letter, Banshee, Figure 1, Porter House Review, CHEERIO and The Times (UK) among others. Her poems have been broadcast by BBC Radio London, BBC Radio 4 and Belfast's Poetry Jukebox.

 

Demi published her first pamphlet age 15, with a follow-up, The End of Dance, at age 19. Her first full-length collection, Small Machine was released by Write Bloody UK in April 2022, followed by a five-week, international book tour. It was short-listed for the 2022 Poetry Book Awards, based in Wales, and is available for order worldwide.

 

NYT best-selling author of Know My Name, Chanel Miller called Small Machine, "Strikingly luminous and soothing. [A book that] celebrates existing through the moments we once believed to be unbearable."

Demi recently completed her MA in Actor & Performer Training at Rose Bruford College, and appeared in the RBC production of This Restless House by Zinnie Harris at Stone Nest (London - West End). Demi has worked with Studio Olafur Eliasson and the solar energy nonprofit Little Sun. Her “Life-Size David Bowie Pillow” and  online brand PROXYSHOP have been covered by NME, Mashable, Nerdist and Hellogiggles.

 

She was commended for her work as a visual artist at University of California, Santa Barbara with three awards of distinction: the Wendy Anne Finkel Memorial Award (2013), The Bruce Award (2012) and the CCS Faculty Executive Committee Commendation of Excellence Award (2014). She was admitted into the Department of Art's highly selective Honors Program (a BFA equivalent) as a junior.

 

As a first-generation Austrian-American, language and travel are important components of her work. When not traveling, Demi is at home with a massive cat called Gus. She is working toward a second book: An exploration of motherhood and childlessness across Europe and through the ages.
