Writing for "Non-Writers"

Have you ever wanted to write? This six-week course is for newcomers who are interested in writing but hesitant to take the first step, as well as for those who want to kick start their writing practice after a break. We aim to take the pressure away from writing and make it fun. All genres are welcome. Participants will be led through movement and writing exercises to tap into their creative flow, then structured critique to help refine what they have produced.

We hope everyone will come away with a newfound sense of freedom and joy around writing, as well as concrete skills to continue to hone your craft and find inspiration when you are out of the course. At the end of six weeks, participants will have the option of putting together a zine and public reading of their work.

What others have to say:

"Demi is an incredible teacher and inspiring leader. She holds the space for curiosity, allowing questions as you go, while creating an atmosphere that is welcoming and conducive to learning. I loved her writing workshop at STATTLAB and got so much out it particularly the free writing prompts that she facilitated at the beginning of each session. These allowed me to reconnect with writing in a way that I hadn't in many years. Thank you Demi!"

— Elise Mireille,  Teacher & Founder
of
THERAPY OF DANCE

"Demi’s writing workshop was exactly what I needed to spark my creativity and start writing again. She’s an extremely organized and engaging workshop leader, striking the perfect balance of structure and flow. She created an inclusive environment of creative experimentation and support. I’ve been waiting for her to host another workshop!"

— Christine Sweeney,

Host of KAPiTAL KOMeDY

"Demi is an articulate person and a skillful editor who puts as much love into other's poems as she does into her own. Taking a class with her would be extremely beneficial to anyone who wants to get their work published."

— Paige Wajda-Smith, Poet & Editor

"Demi's prowess as a poet aside, her many gifts also include the ability to foster a comfortable, welcoming, collaborative, and inspiring workspace. I often think back to my time writing with Demi in her workshop last year as one of the highlights of my time participating in Berlin's writing scene not just for the community it introduced me to, but for the support I received from my peers, and the challenges and motivations her facilitation encouraged. Without question, my time with Demi in her workshop pushed me to become a better, more focused and productive writer, and I look forward to working with her again."

— Eliza Levinson, Artist & Journalist

"Demi facilitates writing groups and events with mindfulness and sensibility, always sure to be inclusive to all and attentive to the needs of each writer. My time working with Demi on my individual poems as well as larger writing projects has been invaluable and I’m continually grateful for her counsel and support."

Spoken Word: Writing & Performance

Storytelling is at the heart of the human experience. In this six-week course, instructor Demi Anter will guide you to find your unique voice as a writer and performer. A few words from former students:

"I carry the lessons I learned from Demi with me to this day. Whether I am writing or speaking in public, each word is intentional. I can express myself more completely, which is something I will be forever grateful for."

— Natalie Earhart,

Co-Founder of Almost Real Things

"As a musician, I have applied Demi’s spoken word teachings to my music by reminding me to skip all the fillers and cut to the chase. Keep it simple, to the point, and with conviction: an effective principle that I will continue to use in many facets of my life."

— Eddie Perez, Musician

"Demi has developed a strong pedagogical practice to complement her own accomplishments as a performer. Under her tutelage, students see a remarkable development in their practice, and, miraculously, it never really feels like work."

— Vijay Masharani, Artist

"Spoken word changed my life. I used to be that kid in class sweating, over-thinking, feeling like I was about to have a heart attack just because I raised my hand. Now, I walk into a room full of people I don’t know and look forward to sparking fascinating conversation. I didn’t just learn how to speak engagingly in front of a crowd... I also found access to my personal wealth of insight. I learned how to connect, and that is worth more than words could possibly describe."
